Rams and dwarf cichlids bring the intelligence and personality of cichlids in a small, peaceful package. The German blue ram and its electric blue and gold forms are the stars here, with rich colour and engaging behaviour. These are fish that interact with their keeper and each other, and we condition ours carefully before shipping Australia-wide.
Caring for Rams
Rams are warmth lovers and do best at the higher end of the tropical range, around 26 to 30 degrees. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water and a mature, stable tank, as they are more sensitive to water quality than many community fish. Give them gentle tankmates, some cover, and clean conditions, and they reward you with colour, pairing behaviour, and even breeding.
Worth the Extra Care
Rams ask for a little more than a beginner livebearer, but they are not difficult once their needs are met. The key is a settled tank with stable warmth and clean water. We are happy to talk you through getting a tank ready for them, because seeing a healthy pair of rams in good colour is well worth the effort.
Common Questions
Are rams hard to keep? They are not beginner-proof, but in a mature, warm, clean tank they are very manageable and hugely rewarding.
What temperature do rams need? Warmer than most community fish, ideally 26 to 30 degrees, which is worth keeping in mind when choosing tankmates.
