Tetras and rasboras are the classic schooling fish that bring a planted tank to life. A tight group moving together, catching the light, is one of the best sights in the hobby. From the unmistakable cardinal tetra to peaceful nano rasboras, these fish shine in numbers and suit soft, planted, and blackwater setups beautifully. Ours are well-conditioned and shipped Australia-wide.
Keeping Tetras and Rasboras
These are shoaling fish, and the single most important thing you can do is keep them in a decent-sized group, ideally eight to ten or more. In good numbers they feel secure, colour up, and school tightly, whereas a small group often hides and looks washed out. Most prefer soft, slightly acidic water and a temperature of 23 to 28 degrees, and they look their absolute best against dark substrate and planting.
Built for Blackwater
Many tetras and rasboras come from soft, tannin-stained waters, so they are a natural match for a blackwater tank. Adding botanicals to soften and tint the water can bring out richer colour and more natural behaviour. It is one of our favourite ways to keep these fish, and it shows them off at their best.
Common Questions
How many tetras should I keep? Aim for at least eight to ten of a species. Larger groups school better and show far more colour and confidence.
What water suits them best? Most prefer soft, slightly acidic water, which is why they thrive in planted and blackwater aquariums.
