The Red Neon Blue-Eye is one of the most vibrant nano rainbowfish available in the aquarium hobby. Their glowing red-orange bodies, shimmering blue eyes, and energetic behaviour make them a standout species for planted aquariums and nano community tanks.

Native to Papua New Guinea, these small rainbowfish are constantly active and display incredible colour when kept in groups. Males develop extended fins and deep red tones while displaying to females, creating a stunning display of movement and colour throughout the aquarium.

Red Neon Blue-Eyes are especially striking in densely planted aquariums, where their colours contrast beautifully against green plants and natural hardscape.

At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited for home aquariums.

Recommended Group Sizes

Red Neon Blue-Eyes are true schooling fish and display their best colour and behaviour when kept in groups.

While small groups can be kept, larger groups allow males to compete for attention and show their brightest colours.

Recommended group sizes:

  • 6 fish – starter group
  • 8–10 fish – ideal display group
  • 12+ fish – full schooling display

Many aquarists find that once the group reaches 10 or more fish, the aquarium becomes significantly more active and colourful as the males constantly display to one another.

Why Larger Groups Look Better

In small groups, males often suppress their colours to avoid conflict.

In larger groups, males feel more confident and will:

  • flare their fins
  • display bright red colours
  • perform short courtship dances
  • interact constantly with other fish

This behaviour creates the fast-moving, colourful displays rainbowfish are famous for.
