Freshwater shrimp are tiny, colourful, and surprisingly addictive to keep. Neocaridina shrimp, including the popular cherry and blue dream colours, graze biofilm and algae all day and breed readily in a stable tank. They are peaceful, fascinating to watch, and a brilliant addition to a planted aquarium. Ours are captive-bred and shipped Australia-wide.
Keeping Neocaridina Shrimp
Neocaridina are the hardy, beginner-friendly end of the shrimp world. They tolerate a wide range of water, from a pH of around 6.5 to 8 and temperatures from the high teens to high twenties, which makes them forgiving for new shrimp keepers. The one thing they will not tolerate is copper, so avoid copper-based medications and check that fertilisers and treatments are shrimp-safe. A mature, planted tank with plenty of biofilm is shrimp heaven.
A Colony That Looks After Itself
Kept well, neocaridina breed steadily in freshwater with no special effort, slowly building a colony of grazing colour. They make a great cleanup crew in a planted tank and pair beautifully with nano fish, as long as those fish are too small to treat the shrimp as a snack. It is one of the most relaxing corners of the hobby.
