Description

Black Moor Goldfish - Velvety Black Colour and Distinctive Telescope Eyes

The Black Moor Goldfish is instantly recognisable for its deep, velvety solid black colouration and its distinctive protruding telescope eyes, a striking combination found in few other fancy goldfish varieties.

Those large telescope eyes mean the Black Moor has more limited eyesight than other goldfish, so it moves at an even more deliberate, careful pace and does best in a tank free of sharp decor. Its calm, gentle temperament makes it a favourite among fancy goldfish keepers.

At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.

Species Snapshot

  • Adult Size: 15–20 cm
  • Tank Size: 150 L minimum
  • Temperament: Peaceful, slower swimmer than single-tail goldfish — best kept with other fancy varieties, not fast comets that will out-compete them for food
  • Temperature: 18–24°C
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Ideal Habitat and Care

Provide a 150 L or larger tank with smooth, rounded decor and no sharp edges, since the Black Moor's protruding eyes are easily injured.

  • Temperature: 18–24°C
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Water Flow: Gentle to moderate — strong current can be tiring for this rounder-bodied, slower swimmer
  • Maintenance: Strong filtration with regular partial water changes to manage waste load

Diet

This gentle omnivore benefits from smaller feeds it can locate easily given its limited eyesight.

  • Goldfish flake or pellet sized for a smaller mouth
  • Blanched vegetables such as peas or zucchini
  • Occasional frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp
  • Smaller, more frequent feeds to reduce the risk of swim bladder issues

Compatibility

This rounder-bodied fancy goldfish is a slower, more deliberate swimmer than single-tail comets and does best alongside other fancy varieties that share its gentler pace and won't out-compete it at feeding time.

Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other fantail, ryukin or moor goldfish
  • Other similarly slow-swimming fancy varieties
  • Peaceful, cold-tolerant snails
  • Avoid fast single-tail comets, which will out-compete them for food

Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
