Description

Crowntail Male Betta - Spiky Crown-Like Finnage on a Bold Show Betta

The Crowntail Male Betta is defined by its dramatically reduced fin rays, which spread out into spiky, crown-like points rather than the smooth webbing seen on other betta finnage types. The effect gives each fin a jagged, almost fractal-like silhouette that's unmistakable in the tank.

Beyond the striking fin structure, this is a confident, alert betta that will flare and display readily, especially when it catches its own reflection. Like all male bettas, it carries a strong territorial streak and should always be housed as the only betta in its tank.

At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.

Species Snapshot

  • Adult Size: 6–7 cm
  • Tank Size: 20 L minimum, heated and filtered
  • Temperament: Highly territorial toward other bettas — never house two males together; can be fin-nippy toward slow or brightly coloured tankmates
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ideal Habitat and Care

A heated, filtered 20 L or larger aquarium with some floating plants gives the Crowntail's spiky fins room to move without snagging on sharp decor.

  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Water Flow: Low to gentle — bettas dislike strong currents
  • Maintenance: Weekly partial water changes with stable, cycled filtration

Diet

This carnivore-leaning omnivore does best on a protein-rich, varied diet.

  • High-quality betta pellets as a daily staple
  • Frozen or live bloodworm for enrichment
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp for extra protein
  • Occasional variety to keep colours vibrant

Compatibility

Best kept alone, or with calm bottom dwellers and non-fin-nipping tankmates; avoid other bettas and gourami, which can trigger territorial aggression.

Suitable tankmates include:

  • Calm bottom-dwelling species such as corydoras
  • Peaceful, fast-moving nano fish that stay out of its territory
  • Snails in a well-established, planted tank
  • Avoid other male bettas and gourami

Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
