Description

Dumbo Halfmoon Betta - Oversized Ear-Like Fins on a Half-Moon Tail

The Dumbo Halfmoon Betta combines the dramatic 180-degree half-moon tail spread with oversized, ear-like pectoral fins that flutter as the fish swims, a distinctive trait that gives the strain its name and instantly sets it apart from standard halfmoons.

Those large pectoral fins add extra visual flair to an already showy betta, though the fish itself is just as territorial and confident as any other male betta. It's an engaging, expressive fish to watch, flaring its full finnage readily when it feels challenged.

At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.

Species Snapshot

  • Adult Size: 6–7 cm
  • Tank Size: 20 L minimum, heated and filtered
  • Temperament: Highly territorial toward other bettas — never house two males together; can be fin-nippy toward slow or brightly coloured tankmates
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ideal Habitat and Care

A heated, filtered 20 L or larger aquarium with calm water and soft decor suits the Dumbo Halfmoon, whose large pectoral and tail fins benefit from gentle conditions.

  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Water Flow: Low to gentle — bettas dislike strong currents
  • Maintenance: Weekly partial water changes with stable, cycled filtration

Diet

A protein-rich diet supports vibrant colour and healthy fin growth for this show-quality strain.

  • High-quality betta pellets as a daily staple
  • Frozen or live bloodworm for enrichment
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp for extra protein
  • Occasional variety to keep colours vibrant

Compatibility

Best kept alone, or with calm bottom dwellers and non-fin-nipping tankmates; avoid other bettas and gourami, which can trigger territorial aggression.

Suitable tankmates include:

  • Calm bottom-dwelling species such as corydoras
  • Peaceful, fast-moving nano fish that stay out of its territory
  • Snails in a well-established, planted tank
  • Avoid other male bettas and gourami

Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
