Description

Golden Comet Goldfish - Solid Golden-Orange, Built to Grow Big

The Golden Comet Goldfish shows a solid, even golden-orange colouration across its entire body, giving it the clean, uniform look most people picture when they think of a classic goldfish.

This is an unheated, true cold-water fish that grows large and fast, developing a long, elegant single tail and a streamlined body built for speed. Comets are among the most active swimmers in the goldfish family, and given the space they will happily reach pond-sized proportions over time.

At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.

Species Snapshot

  • Adult Size: 20–30 cm+ (grows large, especially in ponds)
  • Tank Size: 200 L minimum, or a pond for full-grown specimens
  • Temperament: Peaceful, hardy, very active swimmer
  • Temperature: 10–24°C (true cold-water fish, no heater required)
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Difficulty: Easy

Ideal Habitat and Care

Plan for a 200 L or larger tank at minimum, or better still an outdoor pond, since this comet strain grows quickly and needs room to reach its full size.

  • Temperature: 10–24°C, no heater required
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Water Flow: Moderate to strong — comets are powerful swimmers and appreciate good water movement
  • Maintenance: Strong filtration and frequent partial water changes, as these fish produce heavy waste

Diet

This hardy omnivore isn't a fussy eater, but portion control matters given how much waste comets produce.

  • Goldfish flake or pellet as a daily staple
  • Blanched vegetables such as peas or zucchini
  • Occasional frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp
  • Feed in small amounts several times a day rather than one large feed

Compatibility

As true cold-water fish, comets and shubunkins are outgoing, fast-growing swimmers best paired with other single-tail goldfish that can keep pace with them at feeding time.

Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other Comet or Shubunkin Goldfish
  • Common or fancy single-tail goldfish of a similar size
  • Large, hardy pond fish
  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows in unheated setups

Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
