The Kissing Gourami is best known for its unusual "kissing" behaviour, where two fish press their thick, fleshy lips together, a display that actually signals dominance rather than affection between individuals. Its elongated, streamlined body and constantly grazing lips make it a distinctive and entertaining addition to a larger aquarium.

Generally peaceful when young, this species can become more territorial as it matures and grows toward 15 cm or more, so a spacious tank with robust, similarly sized tankmates is important for the long term. It's a hardy fish that spends much of its time grazing algae from surfaces around the tank.
