Red Cap Oranda Goldfish - Iconic White Body With a Bold Red Cap
The Red Cap Oranda Goldfish shows a clean white body topped with a distinctive red cap of raspberry-like wen growth across the crown of its head, one of the most iconic and recognisable colour combinations in the fancy goldfish world.
That wen growth continues to develop as the fish matures, so the cap becomes fuller and more pronounced over time, while the rest of the body stays true to its classic Oranda shape. It's a slow, graceful swimmer that needs a little extra attention to water quality because of its head growth.
At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.
Species Snapshot
- Adult Size: 15–20 cm
- Tank Size: 150 L minimum
- Temperament: Peaceful, slow swimmer — best kept with other similarly slow fancy goldfish
- Temperature: 18–24°C
- pH: 7.0–8.0
- Difficulty: Moderate (the wen/head growth can trap debris, so water quality needs close attention)
Ideal Habitat and Care
A 150 L or larger tank with gentle flow and no sharp decor suits the Red Cap Oranda, whose head growth is more delicate than a plain-headed goldfish.
- Temperature: 18–24°C
- pH: 7.0–8.0
- Water Flow: Gentle — this slow, rounder-bodied swimmer prefers calm water
- Maintenance: Strong filtration with frequent partial water changes, as the wen growth can trap debris and affect water quality
Diet
This omnivore does best on smaller, more frequent feeds appropriate for its wen-covered mouth area.
- Goldfish flake or pellet sized for a smaller mouth
- Blanched vegetables such as peas or zucchini
- Occasional frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp
- Smaller, more frequent feeds to help avoid swim bladder issues
Compatibility
As one of the slowest-swimming fancy goldfish varieties, wen-headed goldfish do best kept exclusively with other similarly slow, rounder-bodied fancy goldfish.
Suitable tankmates include:
- Other Oranda or Ranchu goldfish
- Other slow-swimming fancy goldfish varieties
- Peaceful, cold-tolerant snails
- Avoid fast single-tail comets, which will out-compete them for food
Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
