Tort Mystery Snail - Mottled Tortoiseshell Beauty for Your Clean-Up Crew
Named for its mottled brown-and-gold tortoiseshell shell pattern, the Tort Mystery Snail brings a marbled, earthy look that no two individuals quite share. Each shell carries its own unique blend of streaks and patches, giving collectors a genuinely one-of-a-kind grazer for the aquarium.
Beyond its striking pattern, the Tort Mystery Snail is every bit as hardy and low-maintenance as other mystery snail forms. It grazes tirelessly on algae and biofilm, tolerates a wide range of community tankmates, and grows into an impressively large, long-lived addition to a well-kept aquarium.
At N8 Aquatics, our fish are carefully raised and conditioned to ensure healthy stock suited to home aquariums.

Ideal Habitat and Care
A 40 L or larger aquarium with harder, well-oxygenated water and some open surface access suits this air-breathing grazer well.
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- pH: 7.0–8.0 (harder water with good calcium supports healthy shell growth)
- Water Flow: Low to moderate flow with access to the surface, as mystery snails breathe air via a siphon
- Maintenance: Weekly partial water changes and stable, harder water to support shell health
Diet
Mystery snails are efficient grazers that will happily clean up algae and leftover food alongside a supplemented diet.
- Algae wafers as a staple
- Blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach
- Naturally occurring biofilm grazed from surfaces
- A calcium source such as cuttlebone to help prevent shell pitting
Compatibility
Mystery snails are peaceful, easy-going clean-up crew members that do well in most community set-ups. Avoid copper-based medications, which are toxic to snails, and avoid snail-eating loaches.
Suitable tankmates include:
- Peaceful community fish
- Shrimp
- Other peaceful snails
Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
